Direct Feed Low-Activity Waste (DFLAW)

The Hanford Site is closing in to a long-standing cleanup goal: treating Hanford tank waste through the Direct-Feed Low-Activity Waste (DFLAW) Program. The “direct-feed” process involves separating the waste to remove the most radioactive parts, allowing the less radioactive, low-activity waste to go directly to the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant’s Low-Activity Waste Facility for vitrification, which means turning it into glass.

DFLAW is a collection of closely connected projects and infrastructure upgrades that work together to vitrify and dispose of low-activity waste. Supporting DFLAW requires major improvements to the Hanford Site’s infrastructure and close coordination among all site contractors, including H2C. DFLAW will be the most integrated operational program at Hanford, ensuring effective and safe waste management.
