About Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C)
Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure, or H2C, works with the U.S. Department of Energy to safely remove, treat and dispose of tank waste at the Hanford Site in Washington state. H2C manages one of the country’s largest and most complex cleanup jobs, which includes the eventual closing of underground tanks that hold 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste. This waste was left over from making plutonium for national defense projects during World War II and the Cold War.
In the future, H2C will also help run parts of the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant to finish taking care of Hanford’s tank waste.
Our team is working to lower environmental risks, make progress faster and save money. We want to solve the Department of Energy’s biggest environmental challenge and leave a positive legacy for future generations.
H2C officially started tank operations at Hanford in February 2025.
